Healthcare is shifting towards a holistic, whole person approach to improve population health, decrease cost of care, and improve patient, and provider experiences. To achieve this, the primary care sector is adopting an integrated, interprofessional care team model which addresses both biomedical and behavioral health, and includes preventative care, population health management, technology, and innovative strategies to increase access to care. Occupational therapy (OT) is uniquely positioned to add their distinct whole person mental/behavioral health and medical care scope and skill to these teams to address patient needs. As this is an emerging practice area for OT, and no guidelines specific to primary care exist, this book will be a first of its kind text for occupational therapy practitioners (OTP) in primary care settings. As OTPs work with habits, roles, and routines that affect health, OT in primary care promotes health and improves patient self-management of medical conditions and lifestyles, reducing patient dependence on costly health care services. This timely clinical manual guides best practices for primary care OT. It helps OTPs fit into the quick paced primary care practice model. In traditional OT settings, intervention sessions are longer, and focus on acute rehabilitation or mental/behavioral health conditions. In primary care, visits are brief, and address patient needs in the context of their presenting issue. No other published guide meets the unique needs of this emerging practice area. Authors provide administrative information specific to OT in primary care, and interventions for specific health conditions, including chronic conditions, common to this setting. Written by experts in the field, Primary Care Occupational Therapy is the definitive resource for all primary care OTPs or those interested in lifestyle-based interventions for conditions frequently seen in primary care. It is also a useful guide for behavioral health care providers and administrators of general medical practices.

This book realistically describes the experiences of people living with schizophrenia and their families, from the detection of the first symptoms until the development of treatments and strategies to cope with this unique human condition. Schizophrenia is a form of psychosis in which subjective aspects, such as hallucinatory and delusional phenomena, tend to distort the understanding of reality. Because psychotic states fluctuate in intensity over time, those affected literally live between reason and illusion. Between Reason and Illusion: Demystifying Schizophrenia is an invitation to understand what it means to develop schizophrenia and to live with it throughout one's life. And this is an invitation to all those who are in some way affected by this condition: those who live with it, family members, friends, health professionals, and everyone who want to have a non-stigmatized view of mental disorders and people who live with them. “Faced with psychosis, the person affected by the disease and the family are lost and go looking for alternative or spiritual help, which usually delays the beginning of treatment. Jorge, Cecília and Rodrigo had the courage to face a difficult theme and the happy idea of writing a book of an educational nature about schizophrenia. The book's originality lies in the fact that it was written taking into account the experience of the person with the disease and his or her family members in the face of this something new that has occurred in their lives”. - Dr. Itiro Shirakawa, Professor Emeritus of the Paulista Medical School of the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP/EPM), Brazil. This book is a translation of an original Portuguese edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

This book examines the five primary areas of the Collaborative Model for Promoting Competence and Success (COMPASS). It describes COMPASS as an evidence-based practice in psychology (EBPP) versus an evidence-based practice (EBP) and discusses how it informs innovative individualized education program (IEP) goal setting., planning, and implementation through teacher coaching. In addition, the book introduces the common elements necessary for improved teaching plan quality and child goal attainment in maximizing educational outcomes. It also describes the extension of COMPASS to transition-age high school students with autism as well as the integration of current research findings from NIH-funded studies for transition-age youth and professional development and training. Finally, the book explores innovative methods to support the consistent implementation and expansion of COMPASS across school, home, and community settings. It discusses how to integrate classroomwide performance assessment to identify students in need of the focused instruction that COMPASS provides. Key areas of coverage include: Identifying personalized goals and intervention strategies (i.e., EBPs) using an EBPP framework within COMPASS for students with autism. Advances in measurement of IEP quality for transition-age autistic youth Integration of accessible online educational materials necessary to implement COMPASS feasibly when implemented by school consultants and autism trainers Lessons learned from professional development and training of community-based autism school consultants for developing high quality intervention plans. COMPASS IEP goal attainment and fidelity outcomes with face-to-face, telecoaching, and electronic feedback. COMPASS and Innovative Education for Students with Autism is an invaluable resource for educators, clinicians, scientist-practitioners, and therapists as well as researchers, professors, and graduate students in the fields of child and school psychology, behavioral therapy, and social work as well as rehabilitation, special education, speech pathology, and all interrelated disciplines.

Handedness is a multidimensional phenomenon co-determined by polygenetic and developmental aspects, multifactorial influences and in some cases, pathological impact. It is important for professionals working with children, including those who are still undecided about their writing hand, to assess, analyse and understand the complexity of handedness comprehensively to prevent problems related to switched or atypical handedness. Beyond Left and Right Handedness uses a practice-based approach to handedness and systematically integrates theory, research and practice. Part I, ‘Theory and Research,’ critically evaluates and utilises the broad spectrum of the handedness literature as a theoretical basis for the development of handedness instruments. Part II, ‘Assessment and Analysis,’ presents diagnostic and analytical instruments developed by the author based on numerous in-depth studies and extensive clinical practice over 20 years. These include the Handedness Profile, a standardised assessment of various handedness dimensions; and the Handedness Typology, an analytical framework to interpret different types of handedness. Part III, ‘Implications for Practice,’ contains detailed case studies on assessment and treatment by professionals working with children presenting with unclear and/or atypical handedness. “This book provides the reader with a comprehensive and scholarly discussion of the topic, presenting a careful, in-depth description of all aspects of the topic and providing professionals with the necessary, evidence-based tools to address handedness in practice. It is an invaluable resource that is well situated in the latest evidence-based understanding of handedness and provides a comprehensive guide to addressing the important development of handedness.” - Prof. Dr. Helen Polatajko.

This textbook provides nurses, allied health and social care professionals with the background knowledge necessary to support individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families. It is a unique and viable resource which is particularly timely, as recent decades have seen a significant change in the demographics and associated care and support needs of this population. The textbook is laid into four sections to provide a logical structure for the content with chapters developing key topic areas relevant to the field. The introductory section sets the overall context for the book and considers the importance of developing an understanding of intellectual disability as a core concept identifying philosophies and models of service that underpin health and social care across the lifespan. Communication as a basis for caring and the overall concept of person-centred caring in a multidisciplinary context is considered. The second section explores key concepts from birth to adulthood exploring the nature of intellectual disability, the child with intellectual disability and other related neurodevelopmental conditions. The third section explores adulthood to older age and considers specific health care needs, understanding behaviour and other fundamental concepts including mental health, ageing and palliative care. The fourth and final section explores the integration of health and social care addressing such issues as supporting and enabling families, education, employment, and sexuality and relationships. Edited by experienced and widely respected professionals, this textbook is written by international practitioners, educators and researchers who all play critical roles in working with individuals with intellectual disability and their families.
